10 Reasons to Visit Cornwall in 2020
The West Country is equally good for a romantic staycation as a family bucket and spade holiday. From pier to point, Falmouth combines fascinating maritime heritage with modern creativity and culture making it the perfect place for your 2020 break.
It was a tricky task whittling it down, but here we have it – our top ten reasons why you need to visit Cornwall and get it on your bucket list (in case you need an excuse…!).
1. Cornish Pasties
If you thought that Cornish food sounded tasty enough, then it’s worth noting that Cornish Pasties fall into a category of their own! Since 2011, the South West staple has enjoyed Protected Geographical Indication by the European Commission, meaning that only pasties made in Cornwall are allowed to be called ‘Cornish pasties!’. Our favourite? That’s a tough one - we all have our shop of choice. The best are where the recipe has been passed down through the generations (just like our homemade ones) and of course best enjoyed straight out the bag followed by a cup of tea.
2. Stunning Coastal Walks (South West Coastal Path)
From giant cliffs which plunge into the sea, leafy pathways that ramble along estuaries and views which reach out to an endless, hazy horizon, Cornwall is a walker’s paradise. Explore some stunning stretches of the South West Coast Path on foot - where else can you enjoy a whopping 286 miles of diverse coastline? Find out more.
3. Picturesque fishing villages and harbour towns
The fascinating history, natural beauty and varied landscape have helped create a plethora of palaces in Cornwall which are striking in their character and appearance. Explore the well-known destinations of St Ives or Padstow or find your own hidden gem off the beaten track. Wonder quaint narrow streets with picture-perfect cottages and follow them to picturesque harbours full of history.
4. The Eden Project
The Eden Project has been voted the number 1 visitor attraction in the UK and is always guaranteed to impress. As the heart of Cornwall, the variety of biomes ensure there is something for everyone at any time of year and the educational activities are also great for children too! Find out more.
5. Cream Teas
Of course, no visit to Cornwall would be complete without a Cornish cream tea with freshly baked scones, lashings of Cornish clotted cream and jam. Stay at The Royal Duchy and enjoy this lavish treat in the elegant surroundings of the Terrace Lounge or outside on the terrace with its dramatic sea views. What could be lovelier?
6. History & Heritage
Think shipwrecks, smuggling, and a booming tin mining past thrown in for good measure. From abandoned engine houses, to stone circles, museums and a rich maritime heritage – visiting Cornwall is an archaeologist’s heaven.
7. Calendar of events
There are all kinds of wonderful events happening all year round in the Falmouth area. To help you plan your stay, have a look at our diary of local events. Some of the most popular events include the International Sea Shanty Festival in June, Falmouth Week in August and the Oyster Festival in October
