This year's sweet creation will be the icing on the cake for guest this Christmas! Take a look at the fabulous step by step Christmas cake in the making...
Day 1 | Cake In The Making
Thinking back to the warmer days of late summer in Cornwall, Head Chef John was already thinking ahead to the Christmas cake of the year! Many sketches later (along with lots of cups of coffee) the idea of simply focusing the cake on beautiful Falmouth came to mind. The Royal Duchy Hotel is perfectly placed with panoramic views across the bay, up to Pendennis Castle, which would make the perfect festive scene this Christmas.
Day 4 | It's All In The Detail
From fine intricate detail of Pendennis Castle to the trees on the coastal path, John has dedicated hours to get the finer detail just right in and around The Royal Duchy Hotel.
The final details were added mid-December, at the time when a Russian Cargo Ship ran aground at Gyllyngvase Beach just down the road from the hotel, watching the drama unfold just in front of the hotel gave the hotel team the idea to link the cake with Falmouth RNLI, and to raise funds for this fantastic charity.
Day 7 | Pendennis Castle
Pendennis Castle is an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII near Falmouth, Cornwall, England between 1540 and 1542. It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire and defended the Carrick Roads waterway at the mouth of the River Fal.
How could we not name out hotel restaurant after such a wonderful art of Falmouth history? The Pendennis Restaurant prides itself on superb fine dining with a contemporary twist. The award-winning AA Rosette Pendennis Restaurant headed up by Head Chef John and a team of 4 super chefs and 6 super chefs in training, continue to delight guests with their flair and imagination through dining, with freshly made to order cuisine, using only the finest local ingredients.
Day 10 | The Duchy Build
On with the hotel! Not only does The Royal Duchy Hotel include all the little details, but it also lights up, along with the street lights around it.
Day 13 | On With The Dome
Head Chef and our in-house Maintenance Team have shared many construction conversations over their coffee breaks. Carpenter whizz Paul has constructed the Christmas Cake base from scratch and dedicated hours to sanding surfaces, bending wood and painting the beautiful cake case, whilst genius Neil has ensured we have light within, to illuminate the cake.
Day 16 | In goes the sea
Not forgetting the ocean, topped off with an RNLI boat which takes centre stage. The rocks are in, the sea is currently being rolled out...watch this space!
Did you know, Falmouth’s harbour is the third deepest natural harbour in the world. It measures up to 34 metres in depth. It is only beaten by Sydney Harbour and The Port of Mahon.
